After 11 months of intense training, Caleb Baker and Brett Odom, freshmen at Founders Christian School in Spring, qualified to compete at the state level varsity track meet against other 9th-12th graders in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS). Earlier this month, they headed to Baylor University in Waco, Texas where the TAPPS State Meet was held and they returned with some impressive results.

Fifteen year old Caleb Baker came back as the 800 meter champion for the Varsity 1A Division. He also placed 3rd in the 400 meters. Caleb stated, “I had set out to beat the state record for 1A. While I didn’t beat the state record, I did beat my personal best record and was honored to have placed 1st in the 800 meters. I ran against many good athletes.”

The FCS coaches, Joe Jones and Dan Baker, are sports enthusiasts. When asked about the recent victories at the state meet, here is what Coach Baker said, “Both Caleb and Brett put in the work necessary to succeed this year and I am very happy with what they accomplished.  What I am most impressed with, though, is the kind of young men they are becoming.  The track accomplishments will come and go, but the character they displayed and developed throughout the season is much more important to me.”  Coach Jones had similar sentiments, “Given the work ethic of these athletes, it is unsurprising that they would experience success as underclassmen. It is a pure joy to see them get to enjoy the fruit of their labor. Their success is well-earned.”

FCS does not currently have a track for their athletes to train on, but that doesn’t stop them. Coaches get creative and develop training plans to help each runner with their areas of greatest need.  Freshman Brett Odom placed 3rd in the 3200 meters and is appreciative of his coaches’ work, “Our coaches are really in tune with our needs and plan workouts accordingly. They establish a system that really worked for me.” Odom goes on to say, “Our speed workouts helped cut my time. Prior to training at FCS, my time was 12:00 on the 3200 meters. After training here at Founders Christian School, my time is now 10:58. I could not have done that without the help of our coaches.”

Caleb Baker feels, “The coaches challenged me with speed, distance, core and a variety of other workouts. I also focused on nutrition the month before the state meet. My coaches advice to me was ‘run your hardest and when you think you’re gonna die, run harder!’ That type of encouragement on the field was not only fun, but truly motivating.”

At the end of the season, both runners talked about the importance of hard work and commitment. Caleb and Brett give credit to their coaches’ expertise and dedication to coaching them. They also displayed a great sense of humility. Caleb spoke about the many great runners he competed against and Brett said he realized he could only be the good runner that he is now because of his coaches’ motivation and the example set by teammate Caleb Baker.

When asked what their final thoughts were, Caleb said, “It feels amazing to be the champion! But don’t take it too seriously. There’s no point in doing something you love, if you can’t have fun!” And Brett’s closing comments were, “Work really hard and you’ll get out what you’ve put in!”

The Founders Christian School staff and student body are filled with joy over the success of Caleb and Brett and the many valuable lessons they continue to learn through their participation in the athletics program.
