Founders Defeats Beren Academy, Advances in Playoffs

February 15, 2019

The hope of a state championship is alive and well for the Founders Christian Falcons after out-running Robert M. Beren Academy 66-52 in the first round of TAPPS 1A Playoff action.  The Falcons advance to the round of 16 to play Bulverde Living Rock next Tuesday (2/19) at 6:00 PM at
Brooks Collegiate Academy (4802 Vance Jackson Rd, San Antonio, TX 78230).

Thursday’s night game proved to be a back and forth battle between two teams trading explosive offensive quarters.  Sophomore TJ Baker made an early three-pointer (his first of five on the night) to kick off the scoring for the Falcons.   Beren quickly answered and went on a run to jump ahead in the first quarter.  Falcons senior Caleb Baker silenced the run with a strong jump-shot with 2:57 on the clock, which sparked a Falcon response that would put them ahead 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Falcons would add to the lead in the second quarter, ending the half with a 10-2 run in the last three minutes.  Senior Taylor Cook started the scoring with a three-pointer from the corner.  Junior Rico Limbrick-Hall added a three of his own.  This was quickly followed by another three from TJ Baker after a great save and assist from fellow sophomore Graham Cook.  Caleb Baker closed out the half making 2 of 3 free throws after being fouled on a deep, last-second three-point attempt.  The Falcons held to what seemed to be a comfortable 32-19 lead at the break.

But the disciplined Beren squad would not give up without a fight.  After taking a punch in the second quarter, Beren landed several blows of their own.  Beren caught fire from outside with impressive performances from their two leading scorers, Teller and Garner.  Shooting 10-13 from the field (including 5 three-pointers), Beren gained not just lead, but also all of the momentum heading into the 4th quarter.   Beren outscored Founders 25-9 in the third and ended the quarter ahead 44-41.

Though they were knocked down, the Falcons were not knocked out.  The fighting Falcons came out strong in the 4th.  Within the first 20 seconds, Limbrick-Hall hit a crucial lay-up as he was fouled.  His made free-throw tied the game at 44.  The momentum changing bucket led to a run that would prove to be the knock-out blow to Beren Academy.  Just after the traditional three-point play, TJ Baker splashed back-to-back three-pointers to put the Falcons up by 6.  Following his two-threes, older brother Caleb added a three of his own, extending the run to 12.  Junior Ethan Hartman, who proved to be too much down low for the opposing team with 11 rebounds, would add two more of his game-high 24 points, pushing the run to 14 unanswered points.  This run would be the difference in the game, which ended with a final score of 66 to 52.

Following the game, Falcons’ head coach Joe Jones gave credit to the Beren Academy squad, “I have a lot of respect for Coach Cole and what he’s done with the program at Beren.  They play smart, disciplined basketball.  They are patient, well coached, and consistently execute their game plan.”  Beren’s game plan Thursday night was to limit the Falcon’s leading scorer, Caleb Baker, with a continual double-team and physical play.  Though they held the district MVP to 9 points, the focus on Baker opened the door for his teammates to contribute in a big way. The Founders team proved in this game they have multiple threats that must be considered.  When asked about his team’s play, Coach Jones said, “Our guys played with maturity.  They handled adversity well.  They responded in high pressure situations, and it wasn’t just one player.  The entire team showed a maturity that led to a win against a well-disciplined team.”  The Falcons are now gearing up for their next opponent, Bulverde Living Rock.  The winner of Tuesday night’s game will advance to regionals which will be played the following Saturday.
